Thanjavur: Samba procurement is expected to exceed the target of 15 lakh tonnes that was planned to procure by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation this year, said K.Shanmugham, Chairman and Managing director of the corporation here on Friday. In a release, Mr. Shanmugham said samba procurement started from December 15 and so far 50,000 tonnes have been procured. As the yield is expected to be more this year, the procurement target may be exceeded. As on date 5,000 tonnes of samba paddy is procured everyday by the corporation in the delta districts. This may increase to 10,000 tonnes by Pongal and 20,000 to 25,000 tonnes a day by the end of this month. Including Kuruvai procurement, the corporation had so far procured 3,54,578 tonnes of paddy. At present, 753 Direct Purchase Centres are functioning in the delta districts. The number may be increased depending upon the need. Adequate gunnies and cash are available for procuring samba paddy from farmers. Expressing concern over collection of extra amount by staff at the DPCs for a bag of paddy illegally, Mr. Shanmugham stern action will be taken against those who collect this amount.
