Yuki goes down fighting

CHANDIGARH: Wild card entrant Yuki Bhambri went down fighting 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 to the third-seeded Alexey Tikhonov of Russia in the semifinals of the Sunny Enclave ITF grade III junior tennis tournament at the CLTA Complex here on Friday.

Yuki had not dropped a set on way to the semifinal and had beaten the second-seeded Ashwin Vijayraghavan in the previous round.

However, he was unable to cope with the energetic game of the Russian from midway through the second set.

In the other semifinal, local lad Vijayant Malik downed Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-4, 7-6(3).

It was a good fightback when Prajnesh recovered from being down 0-3 in the second set to force the tie-break.

It was a revenge victory for Vijayant as he had lost to Prajnesh in the final of a similar tournament at Gurgaon last month.

In the girls' section, Poojashree Venkatesh lost in the semifinals to the fourth-seeded Jessy Rompies of Indonesia.

Doubles: Alexey Tikhonov (Rus) / Rifat Biktyakov (Uzb) bt Akash Gujarathi / Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-2, 6-1; Jeong Han Seo / Jae Beom Kim (Kor) bt Toshiya Suzuki (Jpn) / Vijayant Malik 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Girls: Aleksandra Kolesnichenko (Uzb) bt Yana Kireeva (Rus) 4-6, 6-1, 6-1; Jessy Rompies (Ina) bt Poojashree Venkatesh 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles: Olga Makhova / Nanuli Pipiya (Rus) bt Janaki Gunuganti / Rashmi Teltumbe 6-3, 7-6 (3); Polina Dzyuba (Rus) / Beatrice Gumulya (Ina) bt Yana Kireeva (Rus) / Aleksandra Kolesnichenko (Uzb) 7-6(3), 6-4.
