RAMANATHAPURAM : A. Sellamuthu, Secretary for Housing and Monitoring Officer for the district, has directed the Rameswaram Municipal authorities to take urgent steps clean the island town. He was here to review the overall progress of the works and welfare schemes being implemented in the district. Speaking at the meeting, he said that Rameswaram was an important pilgrim centre, which was attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists daily. Hence, It had to be kept neat and clean always. Basic facilities must be provided to the tourists visiting Rameswaram, he said. "Efforts should be made to dispose of sewage water properly." Similarly, Ramanathapuram, Paramakudi and Kilakarai municipalities must concentrate on taking steps to provide basic facilities to the people, he said. Sanitation, street cleaning, sewage disposal and drinking water supply should be given priority. Mr. Sellamuthu said that officials should take speedy actions on applications received for cash assistance under the Moovalur Ramamirdham Ammayar Marriage Assistance scheme. Officials should ensure proper functioning of hostels for Adi Dravida students. They should take steps to provide quality food to the inmates and preserve good environment in and outside the hostels. Concerted efforts should be made to eradicate child workers in the district. All child workers should be enrolled into regular schools. The Collector, K.S. Muthuswaamy, the Additional Collector, Lalvena, and the District Revenue Officer, S. Thandapani, participated.
