SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Convergence of biotechnology, nano-technology and information technology has sown the seed for creating a "disease-free" society, the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has said. Inaugurating an international conference on `Recent trends in biotechnology' at Kalasalingam University at Krishnankoil near here on Friday, Mr. Kalam said the convergence of technologies had in store opportunities to make giant leaps in researches in the field of agriculture, medicine and electronics. The country had a programme to develop these technologies at a cost of Rs. 500 crore over a period of five years. Mr. Kalam urged the students and teachers to make use of the opportunities and do research for making huge transformations in the country's basic requirements in water and land resources, electricity and health. Speaking on the occasion, the State Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, promised the President that the State Government would introduce a curriculum that would inspire primary school students to realise the dream of Mr. Kalam.
First institution
The Secretary of Department of Science and Technology, T. Ramasami, said Kalasalingam University was the first institution in the country to set up a National Centre for Advanced Research in Discrete Mathematics. The thrust areas under the scheme are: graph theory and combinatorics, cryptography, algorithms and complexity, logic and its applications, algebra, geometry and computation. The Virudhunagar Collector, S.S. Jawahar, and the varsity Pro-Chancellor, K. Sridharan, were present.
