CPI(M) should give up education portfolio: MSF

Special Correspondent

Call to create conducive condition for all-party talks

  • Warns Government against going in for litigation
  • Opposes introduction of lottery for sports development

KOZHIKODE: The Muslim Students Federation (MSF), students' wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), on Friday demanded that the CPI(M) give up the education portfolio in view of the Kerala High Court rendering null and void some key provisions of its law on admission to self-financing professional colleges enacted by the LDF Government.

MSF president P.M. Sadiq Ali and treasurer K.C. Mujeeb Rahman said the CPI(M) should give up the education portfolio to create a conducive condition for all-party talks to find a solution to problems in professional education.

They said the situation arising out of the High Court order had shown that it would not make a difference if a national or regional party handled education. What was important was how it was managed, they said referring to criticism about the manner in which the IUML had handled education portfolio as a constituent of the UDF Government.

The MSF leadership also warned that if the Government continued to resort to litigation on this issue, there would be further problems.

Urging the Government to take effective steps to control self-financing professional colleges without impinging on the rights of minorities, the MSF leaders warned that it would launch agitations if the Government dragged its feet on this issue.

The MSF leadership also reiterated its opposition to the introduction of Government lottery to raise funds for sports development.

The MSF will launch agitations against the sports lottery and undertake a campaign to persuade people to boycott "goods of imperialist powers" to protest against the execution of the former Iraq president Saddam Hussein.
