NALGONDA: Police arrested about fifty agitators including the top leaders of opposition parties when they tried to squat on the NH-9 in protest against the reported closure of Narketpally bus depot on Friday.

The leaders who were arrested by the police included Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Katikam Sattaiah Goud, Ramana Naik and Regatte Mallikharjuna Reddy of the Telugu Desam Party, Ch.Sitaramulu of the CPI (M), Goli Madhusudan Reddy of the BJP, Ratnakar Rao of the CPI, Banda Narender Reddy of the TRS. Mr. Sukhender Reddy, TDP State vice-president, sustained a minor injury when a police party bundled him into a van.

Raise slogans

The protesters staged a dharna at the Narketpally police station and raised slogans against the Chief Minister and the local MLA. "The Government is unable to tolerate any kind of protest. It cannot intimidate the opposition by using police force," Mr.Sukhender said.

He alleged that 26 buses and 210 personnel of the Narketpally depot, established during the Nizam period, had already been shifted to other depots. He said that the Ministers and local MLAs of the Congress party should force the Government to withdraw the decision. Mr. Sitaramulu warned of a mass movement, if the Government failed to reopen the bus depot. Earlier, the leaders took out a rally.

Personal bonds

The police let off the protesters after obtaining personal bonds from them, Narketpally Sub-Inspector V. Swamy said.
