Seminar to draw up strategies for progress

Major stakeholders of education sector to participate

KANNUR: A seminar on `Higher education in Kerala: past, present and future' will be organised here on January 9 and 10 under the aegis of Kannur University as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the State formation.

Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan said at a press conference here on Friday that though the State had made significant achievements during the last five decades, it was time to take stock of the achievements in the field and chalk out strategies to face challenges.

Major stakeholders of the higher education system including, teachers, students, researchers and leading educationists of the State, would take part in the seminar.

The seminar would cover various topics related to the changing scenario in the higher education sector, he said. Pro-Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan, who was present at the press conference, said that the papers to be presented at the seminar would be documented and submitted to the Government.

Current status

The seminar would discuss topics such as the current status of higher education in the State, politics of higher education, relevance of basic science in the 21st century, prospects of higher education, access and equity in higher education, content and structure and quality-based issues, he said.

The seminar would begin at 10 a.m. at Dinesh Auditorium on January 9 with the presentation of a paper on the `Future of higher education in Kerala- strategies' by B. Ekbal, the former Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University.

Minister for Education M.A. Baby would deliver a special address on the `Prospects of higher education in the State' on January 10.

A. Sukumaran Nair, M.G.S. Narayanan, Thomas Joseph, Kalady University Vice-Chancellor K.S. Radhakrishnan, R.V.G. Menon, Rajan Gurukkal, M.P. Chandrashekharan, C.P Narayanan, Joy Job Kulavelil and P.N. Natarajan would present papers.
