Udhagamanmdalam: Buses would be permitted to ply on the landslide-hit Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway from Saturday. Stating this to newspersons here on Friday, Nilgiris Collector Santosh K. Misra said that while all the buses coming to the hill station would come via Coonoor, those leaving would be diverted via Kotagiri. The arrangement would be in force for a week. Following landslips on November 13, which had washed away a bridge near Kallar, the road link had been snapped. With the bridge having been temporarily repaired, the road was thrown open to light vehicular traffic recently.
Decision hailed
Various sections of the society have welcomed the decision of the administration to resume bus traffic on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway. On account of the landslides and consequent traffic regulations, the travelling public had been subjected to considerable hardship. People hoped that work on repairing and strengthening the Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Gudalur stretch would be expedited. Since the pressure on the Ooty-Kotagiri-Mettupalayam Road would be reduced from Saturday, the opportunity should be utilised to identify weak spots, they said.
Work in full swing
Meanwhile, railway sources told The Hindu that work on repairing the landslide-damaged track of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) below Coonoor was in full swing. The service on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam sector was likely to resume soon.
