KHAMMAM: A senior leader of the Telugu Desam Party was among two persons arrested by the special parties of Khammam police after an exchange of fire with a dalam of the CPI (Maoist) in Bhadrachalam forests on Thursday night. The Maoists managed to escape abandoning a kit bag that contained Rs. 31.97 lakh, according to Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena on Friday. He said Shaik Abdul Rasool, former vice-president of the Telugu Desam Pary district unit, was arrested along with V. Sridhar Varma, a civil contactor from Manuguru, as they confessed to handing over the money to the CPI (Maoist) near Lachagudem, a forest village in Dummugudem police station limits.
