Madurai in quarterfinals

Virudhunagar: Madurai and Tuticorin entered the quarterfinals of the 48th State senior inter-district football championship, organised by the Virudhunagar District Football Association, with emphatic 7-1 and 5-0 victories over Vellore and Pudukottai respectively at the Virudhunagar District Stadium on Friday.

The results: Madurai 7 (Prakash 3, Yuvaraj, Sundaramuthy, R. Muthukannan, Y.D. Mohan Yadav) bt Vellore 1 (Senthil); Tuticorin 5 (Akivinos 3, Sofi Hussain, Prem Adithan) bt Pudukottai 0.

Gold for Muneeswaran

T. Muneeswaran of Vadipatti won two gold medal's (discus and javelin) in the Madurai district rural inter-block athletics meet organised by the Madurai unit of the SDAT at the Police Centenary Stadium, Madurai, on Friday.

Chess tournament

The Sri Gopalakrishna Naidu - Kaveriammal Memorial Trophy all-India Fide-rated chess tournament will be organised by the Dindigul District Chess Association, in association with the Rotary Club of Dindigul West and PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, at Dindigul from January 13 to 18.
