BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday granted bail to a former sub-inspector of Bangalore who is accused of being involved in the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket involving Abdul Kareem Telgi and several others. The petitioner, Vazheer Ahmed Khan, now suspended from service, had moved the court for bail, saying that the Supreme Court had, on February 15, 2006, granted bail to former Assistant Commissioner of Police Sangram Singh, who was also accused of being involved in the racket. He sought bail citing parity. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed the bail plea saying that Khan was accused number 12 in the City Market police station case. It said Khan along with other police officials had let off Telgi on April 10, 1997 after accepting illegal gratification from him. Justice Mohan Shantangouder observed that the trial in the case was yet to commence and that Khan had served more than two and half years in jail. He directed Khan's release on bail and asked him to furnish two sureties of Rs. 25,000 each. Khan was asked not to tamper with the evidences or witnesses.
Referred
In another case, Mr. Shantangouder referred to Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh the case for bail of Khuddus, another accused in the fake stamp paper racket. Khuddus had sought bail citing medical reasons and the CBI had opposed it.
Notice
Justice D.V. Shylendra Kumar on Friday ordered issue of notices to the Karnataka State Judicial Employees House Building Cooperative Society on a petition by three persons challenging the non-allotment of sites to them. The petitioners, C.N. Krishnamurthy and C.K. Lalitha, former Section Officers in the High Court and another person, said they were senior members of the society and yet they had not been allotted sites either in the Judicial Layout in Yelahanka or at Thalghatpura.
Set aside
A Division Bench comprising Justice R. Gururajan and Justice N. Ananda on Friday set aside the detention of four persons citing technical grounds and said the detention orders should be passed as per the law. All the four had been arrested under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act (Goonda Act) of 1985.
