Stalin discharged

CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, who was admitted to Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospital, Porur, for back injuries which he sustained after a fall, was discharged from the hospital on Friday.

Doctors have advised him to take a complete rest for three weeks. — Special Correspondent

Kalam to confer title on Karunanidhi

COIMBATORE: The President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will confer "Bharathiar Tamil Semmal" title on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on February 24, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Bharathiar University and the 125th birth anniversary of Bharathiar, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu here on Friday.

"The title is in recognition of Mr. Karunanidhi's efforts in making Tamil a classical language", he said, after meeting the Chief Minister. Mr. Karunanidhi will also lay the foundation for a nano-technology centre, a state-of-the-art international students' hostel, a students' amenities centre and an indoor stadium.

Pancharatna kritis recital on Monday

Thanjavur: Carnatic music programmes continued for the second day on Friday at the 160th annual aradhana of saint composer Sri Tyagaraja, which began at Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district on Thursday.

The aradhana will be held between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on January 8, Monday, pushya bagula panchami day. Hundreds of musicians will recite the pancharatna kritis of the saint composer on that day before the samadhi.

Sri Tyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha organises the annual aradhana every year at the samadhi on the banks of Cauvery. — Special Correspondent

Meet on early Christianity in India

CHENNAI: The second international conference on the "History of Early Christianity in India" will be held at the Institute of Asian Studies here from January 13 to 16. About 100 delegates, including 35 from abroad, will participate in the meet in which research papers on various aspects of early Christianity in India with parallel development in other Asian countries will be presented. Observers from all over the world are expected to participate, according to John Samuel, chairman of the institute. — Special Correspondent

Pulse polio immunisation booths

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is setting up 214 pulse polio immunisation booths in major railway stations, colonies, and railway hospitals/health units on January 7 as part of the intensified pulse polio programme. According to K. Kumar, Chief Medical Director, oral polio vaccine will be administered to children below 5 years of the railwaymen and the travelling public on that day. The children who could not be administered the vaccine on January 7 will be covered on January 8 and 9. — Special Correspondent

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Devipattinam police on Friday arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil under the Passport Act. Sources said Sudarshan (21) son of Selvaraj of Mannar in Sri Lanka was staying at Devipattinam without any valid documents. — Staff Reporter

6,177 persons to get free gas stoves

SIVAGANGA : A total of 6,177 free gas stoves will be given away to beneficiaries in the district, according to the Collector, M.A. Siddique.

He said that of them, 4,791 would be from rural side. In the first phase, 1,000 stoves with connections would be given away on January 14. Officials were asked to speed up the process, he said.

Man sustains burns

RAMANATHAPURAM : A man was admitted to the Government Hospital here with severe burn injuries.

Sources said Murugavel (40), son of Thavasi of Kilavalasai, allegedly committed self-immolation on Friday, owing to a family dispute. The Kilakarai police have registered a case.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 124.40 feet with an inflow of 343 cusecs and a discharge of 1,275 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 48.85 feet with an inflow of 852 cusecs and a discharge of 2,256 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 5,007 mcft. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration staged

Udhagamandalam: Under the banner of Ooty Town Aikiya Jamath, members of minority community staged a demonstration at the Independence Square here on Friday in protest against the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Led by the secretary of the Jamath, Yusuf Raja, the demonstrators also set ablaze the U.S. flag.

Depositors' meet

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited will conduct a depositors' meet at Hotel Vishnu Priya, Ramnagar, at 9 a.m. from January 6 to 8. Deposits through local cheques will be received, according to a release.

Circuit assembly

Coimbatore: Two-day circuit assembly of Jehovah's Witnesses will be held at Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College on January 6 and 7. There will be a series of speeches on different topics taken from the Bible. Around 2,000 people from Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and the Nilgiris districts are expected to participate. ERODE: The Food Cell police seized 200 bags of PDS rice kept ready for dispatch to Kerala from Gobichettipalayam. On information, the Food Cell Police seized the rice hidden in the bushes at Oddar Karattupalayam, Gobichettipalayam. The police registered a case.

Water released

ERODE: Collector D. Karthikeyan in a press release on Friday stated that as per the instruction of the Government water has been released from Lower Bhavani Reservoir into the LBP canal for second turn dry crops. He said the water would be released till April 30 for 65 days. As many as 96,561 acres of land would be benefited. - Staff Reporter

Cleaner killed

ERODE: Ramnu, 22, cleaner of the lorry, carrying sand from Musuri to Mettupalayam, was killed in an accident in Tiruchengode on Thursday night, when the vehicle driver, Abdul Wahab, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed it against a temple wall. Ramu died and Wahab fled the spot, Tiruchengode Town police said. A case has been registered in this connection.

Two arrested

ATTUR: The police have arrested two persons on the charges of unauthorised possession of guns, near Malliyakkarai here. Police sources said based on information, the police raided Melthobai area near here and found Rajendran (42) and Palani (32) possessing two guns without having proper permission. The police personnel seized the guns and arrested the two. Malliyakkarai police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Body found

Krishnagiri: The body of a newborn baby girl was found near the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godown on Thiruvunnamalai Road here on Friday. A passer by noticed the body wrapped in a polythene bag and alerted the police.

The Krishnagiri town police retrieved the body and sent it for post mortem.

Work inspected

SALEM: Union Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathi inspected the road improvement work taken up at the Salem-Ulundurpet section of the National Highways 68 on Friday. A press release said the Minister spoke to Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, and higher officials of the National Highways Authority of India over telephone and explained the status of the work. Steps would be taken to complete the work quickly. The Union Government had taken efforts to start the work on making the stretch between Salem and Ulundurpet four lane, the release said.

Polio campaign

NAGAPATTINAM: About 1.48 lakh children below the age of five will be administered pulse polio drops through 964 centres (893 in rural and 71 in urban areas) during the first phase of the campaign in Nagapattinam district on Sunday. The Collector, Tenkasi S. Jawahar, said here on Friday that the drops would also be administered at pilgrimage centres, places of worship, railway stations and bus stands, besides primary health centres and Government Hospitals.

Contact programme classes cancelled

TIRUCHI: The Personal Contact Programme (PCP) classes, which were to be conducted by the Centre for Distance Education of Bharathidasan University on January 6 and 7 have been cancelled in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Salem, Perambalur and Karur due to the central valuation work, a press release from the Centre here said.

TIRUCHI: The Jenneys Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management will celebrate the Pongal Tourism Festival by organising contests for the school students. Detained under Goondas Act

Tuticorin: Pandi (31), was detained under the Goondas Act following orders from the Collector, R. Palaniyandi, on Thursday, following recommendations from the SP, John Nicholson. Police said that the accused was involved in three cases of attempt to murder and extortion under the Central police station limits, and in a theft case that took place within the South police station limits. The detention order was served to him at the Central Prisons, Palayamkottai, where he was currently undergoing a sentence.

IMFL outlet burgled

Tuticorin: An IMFL outlet run by TASMAC was allegedly burgled at Vallanad near here on Thursday. According to a complaint lodged by Bhuvaneswaran, supervisor of the shop, burglars had gained entry into the outlet by breaking open the front door and decamped with Rs.13,040 and three brandy bottles.

Cash looted from shop

Tuticorin: Some unidentified men allegedly broke open a shop at Sattankulam on Thursday and decamped with Rs.2,500 in cash and some consumer items. The police are investigating the case based on a complaint lodged by Thangaraj (57), the shop owner. — Staff Reporter
