Dyeing units to resume production on Monday

Special Correspondent

To file review petition before High Court the same day

CHENNAI: The knitwear industry of Tirupur on Friday agreed to lift its five-day-long stoppage of production after its representatives had a meeting with Government here.

The meeting, chaired by the Public Works Minister Durai Murugan, was held at the Secretariat to discuss the situation arising out of the Madras High Court's December 22 order, setting a seven-month deadline for dyeing and bleaching units for establishing reverse osmosis (RO) plants and imposing fine on discharge of effluents, effective January 1.

The meeting was in response to the appeal of the industry including the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA). Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Rural Industries Minister, N.K.K.P. Raja, Handlooms Minister, T.P.M. Moideen Khan, Environment and Forests Minister, and L.K. Tripathy, Chief Secretary, were among those who took part in the meeting.

Government stand

Mr. Durai Murugan told The Hindu that the Government made it clear to the industry that it could not intervene in the matter, as it was not a party to the case. The industry had decided to file a review petition before the High Court.

Asked whether there was any Government scheme for helping the units to establish reverse osmosis/zero discharge units, a senior official replied that as such, there was no room for Government intervention.

The matching grant scheme (where Central and State governments contribute 25 per cent each of the project cost with the rest from the project proponent) was available only for common effluent treatment plants.

K. Krishnan, vice-president of the Dyers' Association of Tirupur, said the units would resume their operations from Monday.

They would file the review petition the same day. An emergency general body meeting of the association would take place at Tirupur on Saturday.

A. Sakthivel, president of the TEA, thanked the Chief Minister for his prompt response.
