SRIVILLIPUTTUR: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has promised to look into the kidnapping of a Border Roads Organisation engineer G. Ganesan in Assam. Shortly after Mr. Kalam's address at a function at Kalasalingam University at Krishnankoil near here on Friday, Virudhunagar Collector S.S. Jawahar brought the issue to his notice. The President asked the Collector to give him the details. Unidentified persons kidnapped the engineer, hailing from Vijayakarisalkulam near Sivakasi, on December 22. They claimed to be terrorists and demanded a ransom of Rs. 3 crore. The Collector said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's concern over the safe return of the engineer had been intimated to the Assam Government. Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy too had written to the Director-General of Border Roads Organisation. In their reply, the BRO had said that "pro-active steps have been initiated" to secure his release. Sivakasi MP A. Ravichandran also represented the case to the President. Mr. Jawahar and Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar met Mr. Ganesan's family to convey the President's promise.
