BELGAUM: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha headed by Kodihalli Nagaraj, has strongly opposed the Government's move to amend the APMC Act. Talking to presspersons here on Friday, he said the KRRS supported trader's resistance against the proposed amendment but held its own stand on the issue. He said when the Government hinted at bringing in some amendments to the Act in view of the demands by farmers for measures against exploitative middlemen/traders, the growers were expecting that the APMCs would become free from the clutches of middlemen and traders. By proposing to amend the Act to open doors of APMCs to MNCs and foreign capital, the Government had taken an anti-farmer stand. He criticised the JD (S)-BJP coalition Government not taking any concrete steps to solve the problems of coconut growers. They were facing a tough time owing to steep fall in procurement prices in market yards. Though the Government had announced Rs. 4,750 as minimum support price for one tonne of coconut, it was now planning to give Rs. 700 a tonne to farmers who sold their crop in APMC market yards, where the maximum price (in Tiptur) was Rs. 3,900 as on Friday. KRRS State vice-president Veera Sangayya, secretary Kalyanrao Muchalambi, Dharwad District unit president Elias Mulla and youth wing leader Vasant Kumar were also present.
