KOTTAYAM: Archbishop Joseph Powathil, chairman of the Inter Church Council for Education (ICCE), has welcomed the Kerala High Court judgment on self-financing professional colleges. He said the judgment upholds the Constitution and the democratic institutions of the country. The Archbishop said the ICCE had brought to the notice of the Government the unconstitutional provisions of the Bill when it was drafted. It was again pointed out during the many rounds of discussions and also later, after the Bill was passed, during discussions with the Chief Minister. However, the Government was bent on moving ahead with the `anti-minority' policies, he said. Reiterating the commitment of the minority communities to society, the Archbishop said the minorities had always been socially committed, especially to education of the socially and economically backward sections of society. This commitment would be reflected in the functioning of the new institutions also, he said.
