Tension at sugar factory

Farmers' group insists on holding meet

BIJAPUR: Tension prevailed at Hirebevanur in Indi taluk on Friday as a farmers' group led by

Basavanaabgewadi MLA Shivanand Patil insisted on holding a meeting on the premises of Shri Shivakumar Sugar Factory Ltd.

The police did not allow the group to enter the factory premises. Deputy Superintendent of Police R.K. Naik told farmers that they could not hold a meeting as prohibitory orders were in force.

Following this, farmers led by Mr. Patil, who is also one of the directors of the factory, staged a dharna in front of the main gate.

The factory' governing body headed by Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal opposed the proposed meeting and sought police protection.

Irregularities

The rival faction wanted to discuss the alleged irregularities in the factory. It also insisted that the factory should give Rs. 1,200 for a tonne of sugarcane.

The factory offers Rs. 1,100 a tonne.
