Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran will inaugurate the Pulse Polio programme in the district on January 7. The second phase of the programme will be on February 11. At a press conference here on Friday, State surveillance officer for the Pulse Polio programme Asha Raghavan and District Medical Officer Elizabeth John Zacharia said even though no polio cases were reported in the State since 2001, polio cases were being reported from other parts of the country.

The Health Department appealed to the parents to administer the vaccine to children up to the age of five. In Kollam, 2,33,574 children would need the vaccination. This would be administered by 3,738 vaccinators through 1,869 booths and eight mobile booths. The Health Department identified Kulathupuzha, Thenmala, Aryankavu, Achenkovil, Madathara, Munroethuruthu, Punalur, Paravur and the slums in the city as high-risk areas.
