NEW DELHI: If the claims of senior doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here in the Capital are anything to go by, then the success rate of liver transplant operations carried out by the hospital in the past year has reached a whopping 94 per cent. The hospital -- which has the distinction of being the first in South Asia to complete 100 liver transplants -- conducted 67 operations in the past year, most of them successfully. The doctors are attributing their success mainly to the new state-of-the-art technology that they have installed in the 18 operation theatres of the hospital that aims at bringing down the infection rate to less than 1 per cent.
Infection rate
"There are basically two kinds of infection. One that the patient is already suffering from and the other is hospital-acquired infection. We intend to reduce the latter to almost negligible," says Dr. B. K. Rao, Chairman of the Board of Management of the hospital. The operation theatres are equipped with a system called laminar airflow that pumps "ultra clean" air directly on the operation table to ensure there is minimum infection when the body cavities and wounds of the patient are open. Further, the vents in the sidewall suck this air -- that has now become infected -- out so that no other patient comes in contact with it. The hospital has also acquired new equipment like lighting and flooring system, steel walls, anti-bacterial paint and special air conditioning ducts to filter out dust. Explaining the new technology, Dr. Rao said: "The new lights are compatible with ultra clean air flow. We have got seamless flooring in operation theatres that are designed in such a way that they do not harbour any bacteria. There are special filters to keep the dust count very low." Sir Ganga Ram Hospital claims it is the only one in India where all the operation theatres are equipped with this new technology. "The concept of negligible infection is one of the reasons for our success in liver transplant operations. But our surgical expertise, clinical practices and our teamwork have also played a vital role. Today our hospital is at par with the best centres in the world," he adds.
