Police firing: report to be tabled in House soon

Home Department replies to rights activist's query through info Act

BHUBANESWAR: The report of the commission of inquiry probing the police firing at Sorana in Khurda district in which five fishermen were killed in 1999 is likely to be tabled in the Assembly in three months.

Replying to a query of human rights activist Biswapriya Kanungo through Right to Information Act, the Home Department said: "The draft Cabinet memorandum, along with the action taken report, has been submitted for approval of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik."

"After approval, the report shall be placed before the Cabinet and thereafter it will be laid in the House," the department said. The communiqué said the entire process might take at least three months.

Three traditional fishermen were killed and several others were injured in the police firing at Sorana bordering Chilika Lake on the night of May 29, 1999. A judicial inquiry was subsequently ordered by a sitting High Court Judge.

Mr. Kanungo said while a person succumbed to injury in hospital after several days, another fisherman Ligaraj Behera died after one year as he received injury in his spinal cord on that day.

Mr. Kanungo accused the government of violating the spirit and mandate of the Act and betrayed the victims by not tabling the report in the House.
