BERHAMPUR: Villagers from Phulta village, including women, staged a dharna in front of Berhampur sadar police station on Friday demanding release of `nayab sarpanch' of the village Umakant Sasmal, who along with three of his supporters, was arrested by the police on Thursday night following seizure of crude bombs. On Friday, the police seized crude bombs from a deserted house at the village. Supporters of the anti-liquor and anti-criminal activity organization, Lanjipalli Shanti Surakhya Seva samity (LSSSS) at the village alleged that the bombs were kept at the village by their opponents. However, the group opposed to LSSSS alleged that the bombs were hidden by the LSSSS members. Ten LSSSS members from Phulta village having police cases against them had surrendered before police on Friday. Berhampur Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar rushed to the village at night to pacify the situation. The agitators called off their dharna after the SP promised to reinvestigate the case. Mr. Gangwar, however, denied that there was any political rivalry involved in the whole issue.
