NEW DELHI: Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz said on Friday that he could not stop either Tamil Nadu or Kerala from going to court on the Mullaperiyar dam issue but he succeeded in taking forward the dialogue between the two. Speaking to journalists here, Mr. Soz said he was trying to ensure that both States arrived at "an acceptable mean." "At the right time," he would put forth a "just" solution he had in mind. On Thursday, the Minister received a letter from one of the States for holding another meeting. The offer would now be put to the other State. "As of now, both the States have taken an extreme position. But settlement of a dispute outside court and through dialogue is a better solution because then there will be no victor and no loser." Tamil Nadu is seeking to raise the height of the reinforced Mullaperiyar dam on the Periyar in Kerala, while the latter is opposing the move saying a new reservoir should be constructed.
