Maj. Gen. B. Sivasankar
TAMBARAM: Plenty of opportunities are available to youth in the civil sector and so they have to be motivated to join the Army, Major General B. Sivasankar, General-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Goa Area, said here on Friday. He was speaking to reporters after visiting Army Grounds at Pallavaram, where a recruitment rally is under way. He said the State Government had done an excellent job in giving publicity among the youth who had turned up in large numbers for the recruitment rally. The current recruitment process was tough and candidates had to undergo a rigorous selection process, Maj. Gen. Sivasankar said. The Chennai recruiting office had only an administrative role. The entire selection process was formulated by the Army Headquarters in New Delhi. It had also prepared the question papers. Colonel Dhirendra Singh, Deputy Director-General (Recruiting), Chennai, said the number of those selected would depend on the national standard of total male employability and vacancies. Though a number of children of ex-servicemen and war widows had turned up, they were not given any concession or preference.
Fitness tests
Maj. Gen. Sivasankar had a look at some of the physical fitness tests the candidates underwent. He was briefed about other stages of the selection process by Colonel Gurvinder Singh, Director (Recruiting) Chennai.
