PIL plea wants helmets made mandatory
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
A public interest litigation petition seeking to make wearing of helmets mandatory for two-wheeler riders in the State, has been filed in the Madras High Court.
Filed by K.R. Ramaswamy, it also sought a direction to the vehicle manufacturers to paint black a portion of the vehicle's headlights.
According to the petitioner, the Director-General of Police, under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, could issue an order stipulating that wearing of helmet was compulsory for two-wheeler riders.
It could be done in public, he said, adding that statistics revealed that helmets minimised risk of fatal accidents.
Move appreciated
Mr. Ramaswamy said besides Delhi and Bangalore, Andhra Pradesh too had issued relevant orders making helmets mandatory.
The move had been appreciated by vehicle users and others.
