RAMANATHAPURAM: A civil suit has been filed in the subordinate court here to stop the ongoing Sethusamudram Project works on Ramar Bridge (Adam's Bridge or Rama Sethu) maintaining that the project affects the sentiments of millions of Hindus in the country. In their petition, Swami Omkarananda of Sri Chidbhavananda Ashramam of Vedapuri in Theni and an advocate D. Kuppuramu of Ramanathapuram said the bridge was believed to have been constructed about 17,25,000 years ago by Lord Rama. It was not only the holy books that made references to the existence of an ancient bridge between Dhanushkodi and Sri Lanka, but satellite pictures taken by NASA too indicated that such a bridge was built and was lying submerged in the ocean. The bridge was revered by Hindus all over the world. The plaintiffs submitted that the bridge be be classified as an ancient monument and an archaeological site. The petitioners said they were not against the Sethu project but against the planned alignment of the canal on Ramar Bridge.
