"Involve industry in curriculum development"

CII holds industry-institute interaction for skill enhancement

CHENNAI: There is a need to bridge the gap between industry needs and the educational system output, K. Jayaramakrishnan, Head-India Geography, Tata Consultancy Services, said on Friday.

There was a mismatch between requirement and availability of manpower and the industry needed to be involved in curriculum design and development at the institution level, he said at the inaugural session of the Industry-Institute Interaction for Skill Enhancement organised by the CII. Mr. Jayaramakrishnan is the convener for the forum.

Tremendous growth potential existed in industries such as textiles, automotives, IT and IT enabled services, construction and food processing. Lack of soft skills in potential employees was one of the problems faced by all industries when looking at expanding manpower requirements.

According to a CII study, incremental manpower requirement for high growth industries is expected to be around 9 to 10 million across different skill levels by the year 2015. Incremental manpower requirement for all industries is estimated to be around 13 to 15 million till 2015 across different skill levels.

Demand for workers

While the demand for highly skilled workers will be around 0.1 to 0.3 million and for skilled workers around 3 to 4 million, the largest pool will be that of unskilled workers, (i.e.), about 9 to 11 million.

Key questions that needed to be addressed were: what is the additional physical infrastructure required to meet the enhanced skilled-manpower requirements of the industry? What can be done by various stakeholders such as the government, industry and educational institutions to improve employability of unskilled labour?

Skill development initiatives would differ for different categories of works and it was vital that the industry partner with educational institutions in this, Mr. Jayaramakrishnan said.

A panel discussion was held as part of the interaction.
