HYDERABAD: Aiming at reining in errant field staff, the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to equip them with devices that can keep track of their movements and timings. The tracking devices will be linked to a central server of the water board and functions of the field staff involved in opening and closing neighbourhood water valves will be monitored. "There are lots of complaints about irregular timings of supply and the valves not being opened and closed on time. The new plan will help us in watching the functions of the field staff closely and also instilling discipline in them," board Managing Director K.S. Jawahar Reddy told presspersons. A city-based IT solutions company would implement the project. "We have to put to use the best of technologies available and the personal tracking system for linemen is a step in that direction," he said.
Popular system
The system is popular in the transport industry to keep track of heavy vehicles crisscrossing the length of the country. It would be made mandatory for the linemen to carry the gadgets while on duty. The field staff, along with sample takers of the Operations and Maintenance division, also checks 1,200-1,500 points everyday for assessing water quality. As a result of monitoring, appropriate adjustment of the booster chlorination could be undertaken to ensure optimum residuals.
