CHENNAI: One of the many pending demands of the Government Stanley Hospital was addressed on Friday when the foundation was laid for a foot overbridge between the paediatric block and the hospital. The bridge, to be constructed at a cost of Rs.95 lakh, will have lifts and stairs going up to a height of 7.5 metres on both sides. The bridge and lifts will be able to accommodate stretchers. Hospital authorities said the Public Works Minister had assured that the walkway would be completed in six months. At present, of the four lifts in the paediatric block two are out of order. A senior doctor said usable parts from the non-working lifts were used to maintain at least one lift in working condition. The renovated intensive care unit in the paediatric block, for which money came from the hospital maintenance fund, was also commissioned in the presence of Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan and Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran. Mr. Ambazhagan has assured money for repair works. Stanley Hospital's authorities have placed proposals for a students' hostel and separate quarters for house surgeons and nursing college students. The new buildings will come up in the hospital premises. Estimates have been made and the Government's decision is awaited, the authorities said. Mustaq Ahmed Khan, dean, said Stanley, traditionally the oldest institution in the State, houses buildings that are 300 years old. Many of them are condemned and must be replaced.
