CHENNAI : A multi-disciplinary team of researchers from Germany are in Chennai to conduct a detailed study of the Pallikaranai marsh located on the southern suburbs. The team consisting of eight researchers from Freiburg University in Germany started its work on Friday. It would study the physical and social features of the marshland. It would also map the entire marshland area for its flood-carrying capacity and their study would suggest various means to control the flooding in areas around the marshland, said S. Vincent, Reader, Department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Loyola College, one of organisers of the programme. Dr. Vincent said it was a pilot project to study the flood risk in and around Pallikaranai and the team would, later, take up a similar study on the various waterways in the metropolis. A total of Rs 3 lakhs had been earmarked for the project, which would be completed in three months, he said. The results of the research work would be submitted to the Government to initiate necessary action to protect the last of the marshlands located closer to the city, said the organisers. On the inaugural day, the team went around the northern part of the marsh, said the organisers. Then they would start the work of creating a flood map of the entire stretch, they added.
