VIJAYAWADA: Satish Modi, a 63-year-old social activist, philanthropist and trustee of Hyderbad-based Delara Foundation, has launched a novel calendar campaign to promote eye donation. Spending his own money to the extent of Rs.16 lakhs, Mr. Modi had 1 lakh New Year calendars printed in three different languages. The calendars contain thought-provoking slogans on the need for donating one's eyes after death, other useful details on eye donation, contact numbers of eye banks and toll free telephone numbers to gather more details.Despite undergoing bypass surgery four times, Mr. Modi is travelling across the State to distribute the calendars free of cost.
Main objective
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Modi said the main objective of the campaign was to bridge the gap between the need and availability of eyes for cornea transplantation. An initiative taken up by his foundation to offer Rs. 5,000 for every pair of eyes donated had resulted in donation of 200 pairs of eyes last year.
