KOCHI: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has urged the civic authorities to take action against the officials of the Kochi Corporation who had unnecessarily got a tree cut at Convent junction last week. The Minister also suggested to the Mayor that orders be issued to all the officials of the civic body that prior permission of the Mayor was required for the cutting of trees. The Minister visited the spot and discussed the issue with Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams over telephone. The cutting of the tree could not be justified, as it didn't pose any threat to public safety and no development programme was being implemented there. The planting of saplings in place of the tree that was cut down was not sufficient and action should be taken against the officials, he said.
