KOCHI: The planting of saplings in place of the tree that was cut down at Convent junction will begin on Monday. The Health Inspector who was responsible for the cutting down of the tree has been asked to bear the cost of planting and protecting the trees. Five saplings will be planted at Convent junction, one at the junction where the Press Club road meets the road to Broadway, five at MG road and near the Guest House. The Health Inspector will also be made to apologise to the public of Kochi for cutting down the tree. The planting of saplings will begin at 9 a.m., said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman of the town planning standing committee of the Corporation. The Committee has decided to conduct a survey of trees in public places in the city. A meeting of the committee scheduled for January 11 will take a decision regarding an action plan for protection of trees in public places in the city, he said. The decision comes after a controversy over the cutting of a Vaka tree near Convent junction on Sunday. The tree was cut down following an order issued by the Corporation secretary. It was reportedly after receiving a mass petition that the tree was posing a threat to public safety that the order for cutting the tree was issued.
