Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: Over three lakh children below five years of age in the district will be administered oral polio vaccine on Sunday, as part of the national Pulse Polio immunisation drive. Arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the programme. As many as 2,475 booths have been set up in the district for administering the vaccine. The district health administration is deploying 4,950 trained vaccinators, apart from health volunteers, for the programme. The last confirmed case of polio in the State was reported in 2000, from Malappuram. However, the outbreak of the disease in Uttar Pradesh this year, with nearly 300 confirmed cases, poses a threat to the State also. The booths, to be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., have been arranged at all Government and private hospitals, primary health centres, anganwadis and public places such as bus and railway stations, airports and tourist centres. The programme is being carried out with assistance from Kudumbasree, the literacy mission, Nehru Yuva Kendra, local bodies and Government departments. Mop-up rounds will be held on January 8 and 9, when health volunteers will visit houses to administer the vaccine to children missed out on Sunday. The second phase of the Pulse Polio drive will be held on February 11.
