`Know the child's capacity to excel'
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Anxious mothers confused over their children's future on Friday interacted with leading paediatric psychiatrist and educationists to learn about bringing a balance in parent-child relationships.
At a seminar on "pushy parents driving children over the edge", organised at Oxford Bookstore, Professor of Child Psychiatry at NIMHANS Shekar Seshadri and principal of Bangalore International School Anu Monga tried to counsel parents who encountered difficulties in motivating their children to excel in academics. Dr. Seshadri said, "We are against corporal punishment. Parent expectation is not wrong but the trouble starts when the expectation overrides the children's capacities."
Ms. Anu Monga said expectations and burden on children leads to low esteem and depression, and a major problem in the present time was about making choices.
