Move to close down postal office opposed

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Telecom and Postal Contractors' Association has urged the Government not to close down the Thiruvananthapuram Central Postal Civil Sub-Division Office inside the Postal Store depot at Fort.

The Assistant Engineer's office was ordered to be closed down by higher authorities, said a press note quoting association secretary P. Thyagarajan.

The entire construction works taken up by the sub-division in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts had come to a standstill since the Assistant Engineer was on extended leave. The association pointed out that the post of Junior Engineer had been lying vacant for several months.

"In the absence of a Junior Engineer who takes measurements and prepares the bills, contractors are forced to run from pillar to post to get their payments. Many of them have moved the court," it said.

The central postal authorities were not inclined to sanction new projects because of the failure to utilise the allocated funds, said the association. It feared the stalemate would prompt the authorities to abandon the project for construction of several new buildings for post offices.

The press note apprehended that the intention of the authorities was to help the private sector boost its prospects in the postal business.
