POLLACHI: Tamil Nadu Public Works Department sources said they had not violated the agreement on sharing of water between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The sources said they had supplied a total of 10.8 tmc ft of water against the quantum of 12.3 tmc ft to Kerala in the last six months.

Anticipated yield

According to the Parambikulam Aliyar Project agreement, Kerala is entitled to receive a quantum of 12.3 tmc ft of water every year.

"The water year starts from July and ends in June the next year. Tamil Nadu had supplied a quantum of 10.8 tmc ft up to December 31, 2006. While taking into account the anticipated yield of 1,880 mc ft (own catchment yield of Kerala Sholayar reservoir from January to June 2007), the entire quantity as per agreement has already been supplied. Hence, the water is now being diverted to Parambikualam group of reservoir,'' highly placed sources said.

If the anticipated yield falls below 1,487 tmc ft, the required balance quantity would be supplied by Tamil Nadu without any lapse before the end of this water year, a senior official said.

On maintaining the full reservoir level of Kerala Sholayar, the PAP agreement states that the level in Kerala Shoyalar shall be maintained at FRL on September 1 and February 1 and five ft below FRL for the period from September 2 to January 31.

Official sources said the FRL was maintained at Kerala Sholayar reservoir on September 1.

Kerala Sholayar Power House (KSPH) is being operated in such a way to release its maximum quantity of 780 cusecs from September 2, 2006, against the average prescribed quantity of 390 cusecs. "The maximum quantity that can be supplied through Tamil Nadu Sholayar Power House II is 670 cusecs only. Hence the shortfall of 110 cusecs occurs daily in the Kerala Sholayar reservoir, which automatically reduces the level. So the levels as specified in the agreement can be achieved only if KSPH restricts its release to the quantity as specified in the agreement,'' the sources said.

They said the Tamil Nadu Government authorities were in touch with their Kerala counterparts.
