NEW DELHI: The Centre will come out with a new hydroelectric power policy within a month, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, said here on Thursday. Speaking at a conference on energy organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Mr. Shinde said: "The cabinet note for the new hydro policy has been circulated and the Cabinet is expected to take a decision in the next 15 to 30 days." Noting that the Government was initiating a number of steps to render the hydel power sector attractive to private players, he said, "the country has a huge hydro potential of about 1,50,000 MW, of which only 33,600 MW has been harnessed. There is an urgent need for public and private participation for development of untapped hydro potential.'' The Power Ministry, Mr. Shinde said, was according top priority to hydel power projects and had already simplified various procedures relating to the statutory clearances.
