THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The committee appointed by the Government to study the problems in the medical education sector and to work out the details of the proposed medical university will hold its first public hearing in Thrissur on January 16. Committee chairman and the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala B. Ekbal told The Hindu here on Friday that the schedule of the subsequent public hearings has also been fixed. The hearing will be held in Kozhikode on January 17 and 18; in Thiruvananthapuram on January 22 and 23; in Alappuzha on January 29; and in Kottayam on January 30. The hearing will be held at the respective medical college. Dr. Ekbal said the sittings were being held with a view to collecting inputs on issues in the medical education sector and on the proposed university. People's representatives at various levels in the respective regions will attend the sittings. Representatives of doctors, medical teachers, students, alumni, paramedical and administrative will attend the discussions. The committee will also hold special interactions with retired professors of medical colleges. A discussion with State-level office-bearers of various organisations relating to the medical field will be held at the office of the Director of Medical Education (DME) in Thiruvananthapuram on January 15. The committee has directed medical college authorities to submit a `status report' on the facilities available in their institutions.
