PANAJI: The Indian Government will soon enter an agreement with regard to manpower development and labour with the Government of United Arab Emirates. Acknowledging that blue-collared Indian workers, working in West Asian countries, at times suffered from severe physical as well as sexual abuse, Sanjay Singh, Head of the Division for West Asian Countries, Ministry of External Affairs, said the proposed bilateral agreement would give respite to such victims. A similar agreement had been signed with other West Asian countries such as Kuwait and Qatar. Mr. Singh was speaking at the Gomant Vishwa Sammelan 2007 on Thursday. India is building a Gulf Cooperation Council with six West Asian countries, which would address issues such as free trade agreement and movement of labour. Mr. Singh said negotiations in this respect that stared in March 2006 would end soon. Charge-de-Affairs of Sultanate of Oman to India Said Salim Al Sinawi said a free trade initiative between India and Oman was in the pipeline. He said a major problem faced by Indians in West Asian countries were irregularities by some recruiting agencies.
