New Vice-Chancellor seeks suggestions from deans on CBCS

  • Begin personality development courses for students, says MLC
  • Appeal to upgrade facilities at University Public School

DHARWAD: The Karnatak University is planning to introduce choice-based credit system (CBCS) to give students an opportunity to take up other courses along with their regular courses.

Addressing his maiden Academic Council meeting after assuming office as the Vice-Chancellor of the university, S.K. Saidapur spelt out the various measures that he intended to introduce.

The Vice-Chancellor said he had already sought suggestions from the Deans of various faculties in the university and based on their response the modalities of the CBCS would be worked out. "If everything goes according to plan, we intend to start the new system from the next academic year itself," he said.

Dr. Saidapur said through the new system, the university would be able to offer add-on courses to the students interested in pursuing education in other fields simultaneously with their regular courses.

    Role of facilitator

He sought the cooperation of the council members and requested them to come out with suggestions for the improvement of education standards. The Vice-Chancellor said, "I am not here to rule, but to facilitate. I will take all steps to facilitate new measures in the university."

The Vice-Chancellor said he had already taken some new steps, including decentralisation and delegation of powers to principals, with the objective of streamlining administration and to improve academic standards.

Participating in the discussion, Viranna Mattikatti, MLC, suggested that the Vice-Chancellor to begin personality development courses and give importance to developing communication skills in students.

    Scandals

S.S. Patil, MLA, asked the Vice-Chancellor to take steps to prevent scandals in the university. The MLA also urged the Vice-Chancellor to look into the issue of renovation of the University Public School building and upgrading facilities there.
