Karnatak varsity academic council approves recommendation

57th convocation of the university to be held on January 20 24,955 degrees to be awarded on the occasion

HONOUR: Prabhakar Kore, Enagi Balappa and M.R. Srinivasan

DHARWAD: The Academic Council of Karnatak University has approved the recommendation of the Syndicate to award honorary doctoral degrees to MLC Prabhakar Kore, veteran theatre artist Enagi Balappa and scientist M.R. Srinivasan.

The names recommended by the three-member sub-committee of the syndicate were unanimously approved during the meeting of the Academic Council chaired by Vice-Chancellor S.K. Saidapur, here on Saturday.

The Syndicate had earlier constituted a sub-committee with M.C. Kodli as chairman and T.R. Goudar and B.K. Hiremath as members to finalise the names for awarding honorary doctorates. The committee had later placed its report before the syndicate, which was approved by it in its last meeting.

Now the recommendation on awarding honorary degrees would be sent to Chancellor of the university and Governor T.N. Chaturvedi for his approval. Mr. Saidapur said he would meet the Governor on January 11 and invite him for the annual convocation of the University to be held on January 20.

A total of 24,955 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificate courses would be awarded during the 57th convocation.

Criticised

Although the academic council approved the recommendations for awarding honorary degrees to three persons, some of the members including MLA S.S. Patil criticised the university authorities for failing to give adequate information on the process of selection and not making the report of the sub-committee available to the academic council member.
