Kozhikode: All arrangements have been made to administer Pulse Polio drops to 2.6 lakh children, below the age of five, in the district on Sunday. Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy will inaugurate the programme at Women and Child Hospital, Kottapparambu, here at 8 a.m. Kozhikode MLA A. Pradeepkumar will preside over the function. Kozhikode district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahamedkutty will be the chief guest on the occasion. As many as 2, 124 booths have been set up for the purpose in the district. Nearly 4,248 volunteers have been deployed to administer the polio drops. Facilities have been made at anganwadis, Government and private hospitals, clinics, arts and sports club, primary and community health centres, railway stations and bus depots. The booths will function from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. District Medical Officer K. Damodaran advised parents not to ignore the Pulse Polio programme. The vaccine was manufactured in the country and would destroy poliovirus found in the intestine of children. It was safe and would not have any side-effects, he said. He said the Pulse Polio programme was started in 1995. No cases of polio have been reported in the State in the past three years, Dr. Damodaran said.
