kozhikode: A meeting of the Kuttiyadi Irrigation Project Advisory Committee has decided to submit a Rs.2-crore project to the State Government to repair the leak in the canal. The meeting was presided over by Additional District Magistrate G. Unnikrishna Pillai at the Collectorate here on Saturday. It had lead to huge loss of paddy cultivation at Avalappandi. The annual rice production at Avalappandi is 3,000 tonnes. Crores of rupees were lost in the past 16 years on account of the leak. Representatives of the farmers said the cultivation at Avalappandi was affected since the main canal was opened for providing drinking water to areas in the Koyilandy and Kozhikode Corporation. The State Government had earmarked Rs.89 lakh for the annual repair of the Kuttiyadi dam. However, Rs.2 crore was needed to repair the leak along with a special sanction. The canal would be opened in February after the temporary repair work is completed. Executive Engineer John Puthussery presented a report at the meeting.
