Staff come kitted out in khadi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a move aimed at giving a boost to the ailing traditional handloom sector, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan handed over a handloom dress to athlete Anju Bobby George and Industries Minister Elamaram Karim to actor Jagathy Sreekumar at a function held at the Durbar Hall here.

Education Minister M A Baby and Secretariat Employees Association general secretary S.U. Rajeevan were also present on the occasion.

A large number of Government employees in the State turned up in offices wearing handloom and khadi clothes, heeding a plea from the Government to wear these outfits on Saturdays to boost the market for the crisis-gripped traditional textile sector. While men mostly wore traditional dhoti and shirt, women appeared in saris or churidar made of handloom or khadi material.

"This is no dress code. There is only an appeal and the response is quite encouraging," an official said. The employees required to wear uniform have been exempted from the plea. — PTI
