THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The week-long Nisagandhi Dance and Music Festival, featuring prominent artistes from across India, would begin at the Nisagandhi Open Air Theatre here on January 20. Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told a news conference here on Saturday that the festival, which forms part of the Government's efforts to promote cultural tourism, would feature a food festival and a crafts mela too. West Bengal is partnering with Kerala in organising the festival this year, as part of the West Bengal Government's initiatives to promote its traditional art forms. West Bengal would showcase a ballet by Mamta Shankar and her troupe, a Chhau performance by Madhumitha Paul and a dance drama based on plays by Rabindranath Tagore. Besides artistes from other parts of the country, prominent and upcoming artistes from Kerala would also be featured at the festival. The artistes to be featured at the festival include T. V. Sankaranarayanan (Carnatic Vocal), Mattannur Sankaran Kutty (Thayambaka), Kadri Gopalnath (Saxophone), Pankaj Udhas (Ghazal), Madhavi Mudgal and troupe (Odissi), and Debasree Bhattacharya and troupe (Kathak).
