MPTC members' panel

HYDERABAD: A State Federation of members of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) has been formed to press their demands and to strengthen the panchayat system, according to N. Satyanarayana, president of Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Parishad. The organisation would work for realising demands like special grants for development of MPTCs, implementation of protocol, rest rooms for members, standing councils and insurance coverage. — Special Correspondent

Farmer ends life

KADAPA: A farmer, Chowdaiah, 45, committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Bakkannagaripalle village in Vempalle mandal on Friday night. Chowdaiah had reportedly borrowed heavily to sink 11 borewells, but none yielded water. Pressure from moneylenders apparently forced him to take the step, police said. He had represented his plight to the Helpline officials at Vempalle, but no assistance came forth. — Staff Reporter

Bank staff plan stir

HYDERABAD: Employees of the public sector banks may go an indefinite strike in March this year to protest the Government policies of privatisation, outsourcing and merger/acquisition of banks. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Bank Employees' Federation of India (BEFI) office-bearers said its four-day national conference on January 7 would discuss problems of the bank employees and give a call for a "powerful movement, including strike". — Special Correspondent

Telugu varsity exams

HYDERABAD: Examinations for Telugu and Sanskrit courses offered by Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University through distance education for the 2004-06 batch will be conducted from January 29 and 31 respectively. Those who haven't received hall tickets can get them a day before the examination at examination centres by submitting a DD of Rs.25 drawn in favour of University Registrar along with a passport photograph, said a press release. — Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will inaugurate India Soft 2007, an international IT exhibition at Hitex Convention Centre, Madhapur on January 9.

Herdsman dead

KURNOOL: The herdsman of Brahmamgari Ashramam at Ravvalakonda on the outskirts of Banaganapalli town in Kurnool district was found dead and twenty head of cattle were missing. Ramu, 15, accompanied the herd of 70 cows of ashramam on Friday but did not return. On Saturday, locals found the body of Ramu with serious head injuries. — Special Correspondent

Teachers' boycott call

TIRUPATI: Progressive Recognised Teachers Union (PRTU) has given a call to its fraternity to boycott the CLAPS training classes scheduled to be conducted during holidays, i.e., from January 8 to 11.

District general secretary N. Lingaiah questioned the wisdom of the officials in conducting the CLAPS sessions at the end of an academic year. With Pulse polio campaign and Sankranti festival falling on either side of the sessions, he appealed to the Government not to `harass' the teachers. — Staff Reporter

Student commits suicide

KURNOOL: An unidentified college student committed suicide by throwing himself under a train at Krishna Nagar in the city on Saturday. According to reports, the youth was run over by Kurnool-Dhone train. - Special Correspondent

ANANTAPUR: Students of Government Degree College (Arts College) hostel formed a committee of Jana Vignana Vedika here on Friday. Vijay Kumar and Anjaneyulu Naik were chosen president and general secretary of the unit respectively. 3 women arrested

KADAPA: Police arrested three women on Saturday for allegedly stealing telephone cable near Madhavaram I village in the mandal in March last year, according to Siddhavatam sub-inspector Sankaraiah. VIZIANAGARAM: CPI(M) activists on Saturday organised a rasta roko at the fort here and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in protest against the police action on the poor who had occupied government land in Visakhapatnam. - Correspondent

Pulse polio programme

VIZIANAGARAM: The Medical and Health Department has arranged 1,600 centres across the district for the pulse polio programme on Sunday. V. Venkateswara Rao, DMHO, told reporters that 2,63,600 children below 5 years of age would be immunised. He said 2,156 teams were drafted for house-to-house survey on January 8 and 9 to immunise children who were not covered on Sunday, he said. - Correspondent
