Examination-oriented system should be done away with: Barki

Special Correspondent

Students should have liberty to set their goals

Puducherry: B. G. Barki, Director of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai, has said that it was time examination-oriented system of education was done away with as students should truly gain knowledge of the subjects they were studying. They should be let to fix their goals by themselves, he said while presenting a keynote address on the opening day of the two-day eighth national conference on "Indian Psychology and Integral teaching" here on Saturday. The conference is being organised jointly by the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP) and the Pondicherry Psychology Association at the Achariya College of Education at Villianoor. Professor Barki said that investment in education, as an enterprise, was most important as it contributed immensely for the growth of the nation. The higher the standard of human resources, the greater the development of the nation, he pointed out.

However education had not got now the type of attention it deserved. We should let students acquaint themselves with the subjects they were learning. Students should have dreams and hence they should be let to set the goals independently. Professor Barki also appealed to teachers to develop "patriotic outlook". Inaugurating the conference, former Judge of Madras High Court Justice David Annousamy deplored that "overloading the children with more books" without letting them to study the subjects deeply had been bane of education system now.

Teachers should play a crucial role. He said that one should not, however, lose sight of leading features such as adoption of "EDUSAT" (Education Satellite). Mr. David Annousamy handed awards instituted by the association to writers and academics from various institutions. Former Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University A. Gnanam, who presided, said although psychology, as a subject should mature into a discipline as it had all attributes of social science, it had not been given special attention. Chairman of Achariya Educational Public Trust, Puduherry, J. Arawindhan and president of the association Panch Ramalingam spoke. The Head of the Department of Educational Management and Applied Psychology in NITTTR B. Mukhopadyay released the journal of the IAAP on the occasion.
