CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) will submit a revised detailed feasibility report on Outer Ring Road (ORR) to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority soon. Consequent to this, the CMDA, which has proposed the 62.3-km project along the periphery of the Chennai metropolitan area, will seek a detailed project report from the TNRDC. ORR, a project conceived in the CMDA's first master plan, will link Vandalur in the south to Minjur in the north to connect the various national highways radiating outward from Chennai. "It will help divert from city roads the bypass traffic emanating from the Chennai-Tiruchi road, Chennai-Bangalore road, Chennai-Tiruvallur high road, Chennai-Nellore road and Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panjetty road," Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, Minister for Information and Urban Development, has told The Hindu . Acquisition of land for the 29.5 km first phase from Vandalur to Nadukuttagai is over. Officials say the second phase of acquisition till Minjur on TPP Road will be completed by December 2007. Contractors will then start laying a 122 metre-wide road with a dedicated public transport corridor, either rail or road, in the centre.
Capacity
It will have a capacity to carry 60,000 passengers per hour. There will be 25 metre-wide three-lane carriageways on either side. All along the ORR, there will be 50 metre-wide pockets for commercial development. This is an effort to capitalise on the increase in land value once the road is laid, and divert the money back into the project.
