Bidar: The first eye bank in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region has started functioning at the Drushti Foundation Charity Hospital. "We will start by collecting donated eyes and hope to start transplant surgeries in the next few months," hospital director Umesh Megur said in a release. Corneal transplant is free, he said. The foundation is a member of the Eye Bank Association of India and donations are accepted according to its regulations, he added. According to him, some misconceptions were discouraging eye donations. One misconception was that when doctors remove the eye, the face of the deceased person gets disfigured. Only the outermost layer of the eye, the cornea, is removed, he added. The foundation would take up an awareness campaign on the issue. He urged people to donate their eyes. For details contact the foundation at 08482-226642.
