TRADITIONAL START: B.V. Sirur, retired professor, Karnatak University, inaugurating the Raichur Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Raichur on Saturday. Mayadevisharma Charantimath, chairperson of the sammelan, is seen.
Raichur: The Raichur Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan has demanded that the State Government take steps to bring in an amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution to improve the backward districts in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region and conduct special programmes for the development of Kannada in border districts of the State. B.V. Sirur, retired professor, Karnatak University, who inaugurated the sammelan, said unity among Kannadigas was the need of the hour for development of the language. He said fifty years after reorganisation of the State, lack of unity among Kannadigas continued. The talents of eminent writers from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region had not been recognised while conferring State-level awards, he felt. Due recognition of persons who had contributed to the literary field would help strengthen the language at all levels, he added. Mayadevisharma Chirantimath, Chairperson of the sammelan, reiterated the need to bring an amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution which would provide special status to backward districts in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. She said though the region was backward it had given birth to many Sharanas and Dasas who had contributed to culture and language. People of this region fought together to liberate the Hyderabad-Karnataka region from the Nizam's rule and had joined the mainstream after the reorganisation of the State, she said. However, the region was still plagued with several problems, she said. People from north Karnataka were apathetic to the problems faced by people in the south of the State and vice-versa. Everyone should come forward to tackle the problems of the State, she said. Ms. Chirantimath urged the Government to take steps to implement Kannada at all levels in the administration, including in semi-governmental organisations. She called for effective measures to protect women from the dowry menace and to prevent child marriage and Devadasi system. Sincere efforts were needed to eradicate child labour and to improve literacy among rural women, she added. "Programmes must be implemented effectively so the benefits reach the poor," she said. A. Papa Reddy, MLA; K.M. Purad, district president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat; Chennabasava Hiremath taluk president of the parishat; and V.S. Kantannavar, writer; were present.
